Yes, you read it right, your M.O.M. The person, who gave birth, took care, nurtured and showered you with unconditional love. But now, I want you to defy her and not let her confuse you.

All right, I’m just joking. The M.O.M I refer to here is your Misconceptions Of Money. They are somewhat like your limiting beliefs about money. When you have limiting beliefs about money, you will shut off all possibilities of ever earning tons of money and this will prevent you from ever achieving financial wealth.

And there is more to what your M.O.M can do to you. If you have read my previous article on limiting beliefs, you should very well know the extent of the damage they can do to you, especially your success. And your M.O.M works in virtually the same destructive manner as most limiting beliefs.

Therefore, it is prudent to be aware of your M.O.M so as to arm yourself with the necessary tools to counter them. There are numerous M.O.M but I will only highlight the three I personally feel are most detrimental to you, your financial wealth and ultimately your success.

1) Money is evil

In fact, the most common phrase that is associated with this M.O.M is actually, “money is the root of all evil”. However, allow me to demonstrate otherwise.

When you use money to purchase your basic necessities such as food, clothing, a roof to stay under, et cetera, you say that money is good.

But when you spend money on harmful substances/activities such as drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, gambling and weapons you say that money is evil.

However, it is crucial to note here is that money is perceived as good when it used for good purposes. Conversely, money is perceived as evil only when it is used for evil purposes.

So actually, money itself is neither good nor evil. It is how you use and manipulate it that will determine whether the outcome will be good or evil.

2) It is impossible (for me) to attain and manage money

It is not so much impossible to attain money rather it is impossible for you to say that you cannot attain money.

There are numerous methods and these include the non-exclusive following:

a) work for someone and get paid a wage
b) sell a product or service in exchange for cash
c) invest part or all of the current money you have to earn interest

In short, there is actually no way you can say that it is impossible to obtain money. It is completely up to you to decide which method you wish to use when obtaining it.

But what about managing the money once you have obtained it? Well, this is where simple financial planning comes in.

Financial planning is not just about saving your money in a piggy bank. It is a holistic approach towards managing your cash flow, expenditure, savings, income streams, planning for your financial future and emergencies and most importantly letting your money grow exponentially.

You can plan one for yourself or get a financial planner to do it for you. The simplest way is to start with a cash flow sheet that you can prepare to monitor your income and expenditure.

3) Money makes my life unhappy & spoils me

Money doesn’t do both. Money is a non-living thing that doesn’t have the capacity to think, act or feel.

But you can. You have a mind, emotions and body parts to decide, feel and act for yourself. So how you manage your money and yourself will determine your happiness and your character.

You should now be better aware of the various limiting beliefs on money or M.O.Ms as I call them. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Knowing and being aware about your M.O.Ms is good but it is equally important for you to overcome or counter them.
