Missing Link To Problem Solving - A Short And Meaningful Parable

December 26th, 2007 · No Comments

Along with the spirit of giving, here’s a short and meaningful parable that carries a powerful message - the missing link to problem solving.

Amazingly, it came to me (in my inbox) at the moment when I needed it. Was it the law of attraction or seasonal magic in the air? Nevertheless, I’m thankful for it.

The parable is aptly called ‘The Obstacle In Our Path’. Enjoy:-

A little boy was flying his favourite kite at the beach. While he was enjoying the breeze and the sight of his magnificent kite, a rouge wind blew the kite onto the top of a coconut tree. The kite was stuck between the branches.

The boy tried to retrieve the kite by tugging at the reel of string, but to no avail. The branches threatened to tear his kite apart with any further tugging.

It seemed like the only option left is to climb the coconut tree. However, the tree was pretty tall for a little boy and its trunk was broad. If you have ever tried climbing a coconut tree, you would know how hard it is to cling onto one. Its trunk is very smooth.

When the boy wrapped his feet around the tree, he slipped and landed on his bum immediately. He clung even tighter to the trunk again and inched his way upward.

A few inches of ascent and he fell on his bum again.

Undeterred, he told himself to keep trying until he could overcome the tree and retrieve his favourite kite back.

The little boy struggled and struggled until he was out of breath. His only rewards were a bruised bottom and a pair of grazed thighs. Finally he burst into tears of frustration.

All this time the boy’s father watched from the side as the drama unfolded. At the moment the tears fell, a large shadow fell across the boy.

It was the boy’s father.

Gently but firmly he said, “Son, why didn’t you use all the strength that you had available?”

Defeated, the boy sobbed back, “But I did, Daddy, I did! I used all the strength that I had!” “No, son,” corrected the father kindly. “You didn’t use all the strength you had. You didn’t ask me.”

With that the father reached up, untangled the kite from the branches and returned it to his son.

Do you have “trees” in your life that need to be overcome? Are you discovering that you don’t have what it takes to overcome them?

When you feel like the little boy who had put in 101% effort but still failed to meet his goal, expand your choices and ask for help.

Robert Kiyosaki said this in Rich Dad, Poor Dad: “Your network is your net worth”. In other words, your capability is not limited to yourself only, but to your circle of friends too.

The missing link is your network of friends!

If you hit a certain insurmountable obstacle in your way today, a helpful hand from a friend may be the answer.
